The Common Tongue
Common, the human tongue, is widely used as the language of trade and diplomacy. All adventurers are proficient in Common.
City Dweller Languages
Undercommon, the verbal language of the City Below. This language is required for verbal communication with orcs, kobolds, and any other speaking race in the City.
Infernal, the written language of the City Below. Books, warning signs, and other textual information found underground are written in this language.
Racial Languages
Dwarven is the language of industry. Nearly all schematics, blueprints, and architectural diagrams are written in Dwarven. Proficient characters receive a 20% discount when buying weapons and armor.
Elven is the language of enchanting. Proficient characters receive a 20% discount when buying spellbooks, spellcasting focuses, and scrolls.
Halfling is the language of alchemy. Nearly all recipes are written in the language and use the halfling measurement system. Proficient characters receive a 20% discount when buying alchemics, like potions.
Cant
Cant is a sign and signal language. Being proficient in this language allows you to communicate with your hands or certain visual tools (like torches and flags).
Cant functions as a combination of sign language, Morse code, and semaphore. It has many applications, ranging from silent communication to interpreting nautical signals.
Words of Power
Abyssal
Abyssal (Grave Speech)
The secret language of the dead. Proficiency allows the user to commune with zombies, skeletons, ghosts, and other creatures returned from the grave. Hell Knights use this language when casting spells.
Sylvan
Sylvan (Beast Speech)
The secret language of a beasts. Proficiency allows the user to speak with animals. Whether or not the animals choose to listen is a different matter, often influenced by a Wisdom (Animal Handling) check. Winter Witches use this language when casting spells.
